Z1: Molecular electron microscopy

This project aims to facilitate structural analysis of functional modules within the consortium using three-dimensional (3D) electron/cryo-electron microscopy (cryo-EM). This methodology has as emerged as a key technology in structural biology to study the structure of large macromolecular assemblies and molecular machines. The development of dedicated transmission electron microscopes (TEMs) together with advanced image processing methods such as multiparticle refinement strategies allows to process heterogeneous samples with ever improving resolution. Especially the introduction of new direct electron detector (DED) systems is currently revolutionizing the cryo-EM field and has pushed the attainable resolution of single particle analysis into the near-atomic range.
